چکیده

Haddon (1996) proposes a theoretical model for earthquake source spectra in eastern North America (ENA), based on certain assumptions regarding the rupture process. He shows that if ENA earthquakes are characterized by very high rupture velocities and fractional stress drop, then their high-frequency S-wave radiation is strongly enhanced relative to that predicted by the simple Brune (1970) source model. Haddon discusses previous analyses of ENA ground motions, which appear to be at odds with his model, concluding that these analyses contain misinterpretations of both data and theory. He disagrees specifically with the results obtained by Boatwright and Choy (1992), Boore and Atkinson (1992), Atkinson (1993), Boatwright (1994), and Atldnson and Boore (1995). His discussion of our results is mistaken in many points, as we describe in the following.

Source Parameters of Earthquakes in Eastern and Western North America Based on Finite-Fault Modeling

The ground motion from large earthquakes is often predicted based on finite-fault modeling, in which the fault plane is discretized into small independently rupturing subfaults; the radiation from all subfaults is summed at the observation point. Despite the success of the method in matching observed ground-motion characteristics, the physical interpretation of the subfaults has remained largel...

Globalization and Medical Tourism: The North American Experience; Comment on “Patient Mobility in the Global Marketplace: A Multidisciplinary Perspective”

Neil Lunt and Russel Mannion provide an overview of the current state of the medical tourism literature and propose areas for future research in health policy and management. The authors also identify the main unanswered questions in this field ranging from the real size of the medical tourism market to the particular health profiles of transnational patients. In addition, they highlight unexpl...

Comprehensive analysis of earthquake source spectra in southern California

[1] We compute and analyze P wave spectra from earthquakes in southern California between 1989 and 2001 using a method that isolates source-, receiver-, and pathdependent terms. We correct observed source spectra for attenuation using both fixed and spatially varying empirical Green’s function methods. Estimated Brune-type stress drops for over 60,000ML = 1.5 to 3.1 earthquakes range from 0.2 t...

A Strong Ground Motion Catalogue of Selected Records for Shallow Crustal, Near Field Earthquakes in Iran

Understanding strong ground motions in the near-fault areas is important for seismic risk assessment in densely populated areas. In the past, lack of information on strong ground motion for large and moderate earthquakes led to the use of mainly far field large and moderate earthquake records in equations for calculation of the strong ground motion parameters. In this article, we collected and ...

Surface-wave Attenuation and Crustal Anelasticity in Central North America By

The southeastern Missouri earthquake of October 21, 1965 generated fundamentaland higher-mode Love and Rayleigh waves which were recorded at numerous North American stations. Love-wave amplitude radiation patterns were determined and found to be consistent with theoretical patterns predicted by a fault-plane solution previously inferred from Rayleigh-wave data. The radiation patterns were used ...
